Fried Green Tomatoes at Whistle Stop Cafe: Novel vs. Movie Essays
Fried Green Tomatoes at Whistle Stop Cafe: Novel vs. Movie ââ¬Å"I may be sitting at the Rose Terrace Nursing Home, but in my mind Iââ¬â¢m over at the Whistle Stop Cafe having a plate of Fried Green Tomatoesâ⬠(Flagg ). Both the novel and the movie received a number of great reviews and honors. However, the two vary greatly in content. The novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, brings the reader a much more detailed and very different story compared to the movie. For example, the character Vesta Adcock as portrayed in the novel is a citizen of Whistle Stop. Flagg sees Vesta as having church meetings and socials at her home and also as being the president of the drama club. ââ¬Å"... Mrs. Vesta Acock, this little bird-breasted woman... whoââ¬â¢s from Whistle Stop, came in wearing her fox furs and her diamond dinner ringsâ⬠(Flagg 27). However, in the movie, Mrs. Adcockââ¬â¢s character changes completely. She does not play a woman from Whistle Stop, but Ed Couchââ¬â¢s aunt. The film shows her as a grouchy old woman residing in the Rose Hills Nursing Home Also, in the novel Flagg describes Buddy Threadgoodeââ¬â¢s lover as Eva, the town harlot and proprietor of ââ¬Å"The Wagon Wheel River and Fishing Clubâ⬠. ââ¬Å"...she had slept with a lot of men..., but [Buddy] didnââ¬â¢t care. Eva was as easy with her body as she was with every thing else.... The first time she took [Buddy] to bed, she made him feel like a manâ⬠(Flagg 94). Although the movie shows Buddy in love with the most admired woman in Whistle Stop, Ruth Jamison, the film shows Buddy walking with Ruth by the river. His eyes light up when he sees her and he cares about her greatly. In fact, he was trying to retrieve Ruthââ¬â¢s hat when the train killed him. Ninny Threadgoode says in the movie, ââ¬Å"...his heart belonged to Ruth Jamison.â⬠In addition, in the novel, Evelyn, who feels her life has become an endless battlefield, mainly because of her severe self-conscienceness, invented a person she used to give her courage in times she felt belittled. When someone would make her feel worthless Evelyn would think about Towanda and all the super hero battles she would fight if she really were Towanda. ââ¬Å"Evelyn had even made up a secret code name for herself... a name feared around the world: TOWANDA THE AVENGER!â⬠(Flagg 238). On the other hand in the movie, the unrefined and untamed Idgie Threadgoode thinks up Towanda. Evelyn uses... ...st scattered to the wind.â⬠She does not find her house, although her new friend comforts her. In the movie, Ninny says,ââ¬Å" Hey Evelyn, somebody stole my house. It was right here when I left.â⬠Evelyn, who has fallen in love with Ninny, takes Ninny to her house and makes a home for her there. However, in the novel, Ninny Threadgoode goes back to her home in Whistle Stop, a growing city. There has been a lot of changes in the town, and all of Ninnyââ¬â¢s memories have become rundown issuers. Despite the changes she returns to her house. Shortly after she returns, she dies a peaceful death in her sleep. ââ¬Å"She wasnââ¬â¢t sick...she died in her sleepâ⬠(Flagg 378). Indeed, the movie and the novel hold many differences. Characters have changed, been eliminated, events have been left out, and relationships differed. Despite the changes, the film still managed to live up to the standards the book set. ââ¬Å"Fried Green Tomatoes is a thorouly enjoyable move...,â⬠says James Berardinelli quoted from the internet. Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1987, this novel has tons of material which changed in the screenplay. However, both works offer dynamic characters, an interesting plot, and charming dialogue.

marketing Essay -- essays research papers
Marketing Assignment Product The product I am going to design and develop is a brand extension of REEBOK. I am going to design and develop a REEBOK. Mini-disc player. It will aim at 18-26 year olds. I have chosen this certain age group because of the research carried out. From my research I can conclude that the age groups are interested in owning a mini disk player because of many reasons e.g. style, size, price etc. I have chosen REEBOK. because they are quite popular among the target market I have chosen to aim. REEBOK are among one the well known brands in the world, shortly after NIKE. Consumers are interested to REEBOK products because of their designs, quality and logs. Reeboks prices tend to be a little cheaper then their main competitors Nike, Adidas and Puma. You can see this from the research table below: LOGO PRICE Reebok à £25-à £56 Nike à £46-à £150 Puma à £28- à £60 Adidas à £35-à £55 We can clearly see that Reebok set a price just below the main competitors, this is because they know consumers will want to buy products but still at a cheaper price and still have the satisfaction of buying a good brand name product. Brief history on Reebok Reebok's United Kingdom-based ancestor company was founded for one of the best reasons possible: athletes wanted to run faster. Therefore, in the 1890s, Joseph William Foster made some of the first known running shoes with spikes in them. By 1895, he was in business making shoes by hand for top runners; and before long his fledgling company, J.W. Foster and Sons developed an international clientele of distinguished athletes. In 1958, two of the founder's grandsons started a companion company that came to be known as Reebok, named for an African gazelle. In 1979, Paul Fireman, a partner in an outdoor sporting goods distributorship, spotted Reebokà ® shoes at an international trade show. He negotiated for the North American distribution license and introduced three running shoes in the U.S. that year. At $60, they were the most expensive running shoes on the market. By 1981, Reebok's sales exceeded $1.5 million, but a dramatic move was planned for the next year. Reebok would introduce the first athletic shoe designed especially for women; a shoe for a hot new fitness exercise called aerobic dance. The shoe was called the Freestyleâ⠢, and with it Reebok anticipated and encouraged three major trends that transformed... ...to try and compete with these two companies there are a number of ways this could happen The factor of Place is not on such a large scale, the outlet is the shop and although products may be offered by post most of the transactions will take place at the shop. However, the customers must in a position in which to offer its services well and easily access the shop. For example, there must be plenty of car parking near by so that the customers can easily access the shop, it should be available to as many customers as possible. The different sorts of sales promotion are I could come up with, if I feel my product is not doing well are : 1. Buy one get one free - this can also be buy one and get something else free. 2. Discounts.- where products are reduced in an effort to sell more. 3. Competitions - used to get people interested in he shop and products. 4. Free gifts ââ¬â another way to pursued people to buy products. 5. Product trials ââ¬â allows people to try the products before they buy. 6. Point of sale displays ââ¬â special displays to promote the products and gain customer awareness. Here is a detailed map of where I am going to place my MD for sale. Sony Centre: Argos: Dixon:

Arguing for the benefits of vegetarianism
Be a vegetarian. It is all one can say to another to stay healthy. In the current world that human kind live in, it is very clear that many people have different problems in their bodies. Some people may have cancer, some may have flu and some others may be obese. About 8 million people die from cancer every year and considering the fact that Switzerland has a population of about 9 million people, this country would be wiped out to nothing if the cancer killings only occurred in Switzerland. A simple way of lessening the risk of catching cancer, or rather any kind of disease, is to be a vegetarian. People practice vegetarianism for various reasons. Some being health, religiously, economically and environmentally. But even with all the reasons combined, there still arenââ¬â¢t enough vegetarians to change the future of the world. If we were to be vegetarians, first of all we would be consuming less fat and cholesterol, decreasing the risk for us to get obese. With the advantage of not having too much fat in the body, we would have a less chance of getting cancer as well. Secondly, we would be consuming more beneficial nutrients and minerals such as carbohydrates, fiber and vitamins. The loss of protein can be replenished by consuming beans for vegetarians. The last reason that vegetarianism is good is because it is very environmental. When raising livestock in farms consistently produces CO2 from the animals, vegetables produce oxygen. Hence, it is very environmental although plants produce CO2 as well. The world would be living with less danger if everybody in the world were vegetarians. Also, the Earth would be less polluted than it is right now. But the problem is that in reality, it is not. A research page had a result showing that a mere 5% of the worldââ¬â¢s population were semi-vegetarians. The number of pure vegetarians would be less. Many people in the world are not aware of the word ââ¬Ëveganââ¬â¢ which is the same term for vegetarian and most of the people know that being a vegetarian is good for oneââ¬â¢s health, they just completely ignore that fact and carry on a meat-based diet because it tastes good. If people quickly learned that they could live longer by following a very simple process, it would finally be the time period of the human kind going against bacteria. We humans having the largest brains ever seen on earth have taken control of the earth for thousands of years but bacteria, having no brain at all have been controlling the earth for millions. A solution to this problem of not having enough conceptual awareness about vegetarianism can be very hard to find. Since it is impossible for one to force another to follow a plant based diet, the solution has to be something that triggers oneself to follow it on his own. A way to do this is to advertise the positive effects of vegetarianism. Another method, based on a fact of having unlimited resources, is to invent a technology that would make vegetables more attractive to eat. Most people who dislike vegetables say that they dislike them because they donââ¬â¢t taste very good. By solving the taste problem, we would have a lot more vegetable likers. Be a vegetarian.

Shoeless Joe Jackson and His Tragedy
In the short story ââ¬Å"Shoeless Joe Jackson comes to Iowaâ⬠, Kinsella provides insight about a man who loves Iowa, his wife (Annie), his daughter (Karin), and lastly baseball. The setting of the story takes place on a rural farm in Iowa where Ray made a baseball field because he was told by a voice of a baseball announcer ââ¬Å"If you build it, they will comeâ⬠. (Pickering pg 740) Ray and Annie had bought this farm, years ago, to plant and cultivate corn and to raise their daughter in a safe environment. Ray, who was a baseball enthusiast, was told to build this field for ââ¬Å"Shoelessâ⬠Joe Jackson and his teammates to play baseball. He had no idea on how or why he might even begin to build this great field. So he started small with the field, he built a magnificent left field first for Joe. All the townspeople had heard what Ray was building and they thought he must have been crazy. Because he was taking a big section of his corn field and was turning it into a baseball diamond, he was going to be losing a huge profit in the harvest season for years to come. His remarkable wife went along with these plans and said,â⬠Oh love, if it makes you happy, you should do it. â⬠(Pickering pg 741) So Ray began on this project which took him several months just to build the eft field for Mr. Jackson, whom he had never even met. So when Ray hears the baseball announcers voice ââ¬Å"If you build it they will comeâ⬠,(Pickering pg. 740) he ,of course, was Shoeless Joe Jackson. Joe was born in Brandon Mills, South Carolina in July of 1887 and died in Greenville, South Carolina in December of 1951. Joe Jackson was the best left fielder that Ty Cobb had ever seen. Joeââ¬â¢s glove is the ââ¬Å"place where triples go to die. â⬠(Pickering pg. 741) Shoeless Joe Jackson was an American baseball player who played Major League Baseball in the early 20th century. He will always be remembered by his performance on the field and for is associat ion with the Black Sox Scandal, in which members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox participated in a conspiracy to fix the World Series. The Black Sox Scandal took place during the 1919 World Series. The conspiracy was the result of the White Sox first baseman Arnold ââ¬Å"Chickâ⬠Gandil, whose long lasting ties to the underworld, persuaded a friend who was a gambler that a fix could be pulled off. A New York gangster, Arnold Rothstein, provided the money for the fix. Gandil enlisted several of his teammates, motivated by the dislike of the clubs owner Charles Comisky, whom they perceived as a tightwad, to implement the fix.The owner of the Sox had a reputation for underpaying his players for years. Since some of the guys on the team had ties to the mob, it was easy for them to start to resent other players who were straight-laced and followed the rules. There were a total of 8 players involved in the fix of the World Series. Starting pitchers Eddie Cicotte and Claude ââ¬Å"Lefty â⬠Williams, outfielder Oscar ââ¬Å"Happyâ⬠Felsch and shortstop Charles ââ¬Å"Swedeâ⬠Risberg were all principally involved with Gandil. Although he hardly played in the series, utility infielder Fred McMillan got word of the fix and he threatened that he would go public unless e was in the payoff. ââ¬Å"Sleepyâ⬠Bill Burns and ââ¬Å"Shoelessâ⬠Joe Jackson, both played for the Los Angeles Angels after the fix of the series, were mentioned in the fix though their involvement has been disputed. I think he was not involved at all but got caught up in some nasty mob dealings. In the infamous World Series, ââ¬Å"Shoelessâ⬠Joe Jackson had 12 hits (a World Series record) and a . 375 batting average to lead both teams in the individual statistics. He, also, committed no errors and threw out a base runner at home plate. ââ¬Å"Ultimately, eight Chicago players and various small-time gamblers were indicated in the candal. At a 1921 criminal trial, a strong case was presented to establish that some ââ¬Å"Black Soxâ⬠players-as they became known- had in fact thrown games, but all the defendants were found not guilty when prosecutors failed to prove that they had violated any criminal statutes in doing so. â⬠(Morrow pg 1) I, also, found out that there is significant evidence that owner of the Chicago White Sox, Charles Comisky, may have known about the fix and tried to cover it up in order to avoid a scandal. No formal charges have ever been brought up against him or any other officials. In the ook ââ¬Å"Shoeless The Life and Times of Joe Jackson,â⬠there were several letters written back and forth between Jackson and Comisky. Joe Jackson was asking for the loserââ¬â¢s share of the 1919 World Series which amounted to $3,154. 27 per man. Comisky had asked Jackson to return to Chicago to receive the payment but Jackson had prior obligations in Savannah, Ga. These letters continued for several months but to no avail. Ja ckson, also, wanted a new contract worth $10,000 per year. Comisky was only willing to pay him $7,000 per year but had already signed Eddie Collins and Buck Weaver to ontracts that was well above his asking price. Mr. Jackson had started his own business in Ga. which was a Billiard business. He explained, in his letters, that the contract that Comisky had offered was not up to par with the other great players of his era. He explained in one of those letters to Comisky that after taxes and having to live in the city where he played, there would not be enough money to keep the Billiard business on its feet. In the letter, Jackson explains that he has played for less money than any other player of his caliber. He, also, writes that if he cannot pay his asking price thatComisky needs to trade or sell him to another team that would pay him his asking price. Comisky shopped his name around to other organizations and teams but none of them wanted to sign him. In the last letters that they wrote to each other, Comisky explained that he did not receive any other offer from any other team to sign him. Jackson went on to write him back explaining that he would play for anything less than $10,000 per year but he, also, explained that he had heard that Comisky had given a raise of $2,300 to ââ¬Å"Happyâ⬠Flesch who had only hit . 192 in the World Series. Finally,Comisky took matters into his own hands and sent Harry Grabiner to Savannah to obtain Jacksonââ¬â¢s signature for the new contract. Mr. Grabiner informed Jackson that his new contract with the team would be increased by $2,000 per year and he was pleased with that contract. ââ¬Å"This is where the stories diverge. Grabiner later insisted that Jackson knew that the ten day clause was included in the contract and that Jackson signed it in the house in Katieââ¬â¢s (Jacksonââ¬â¢s wife) presence. Jackson claimed that his wife was not home at the time and that he signed it on the hood of the car only afte r Grabiner ssured him that the ten-day clause was not included. That evening, Harry Grabiner, headed back to Chicago with Jacksonââ¬â¢s signed contract. The ten day clause appeared in Article 10 on the third of the contracts four pages. â⬠(Fleitz pg 205) In summary Ray was building this field for these 8 players who were banned for life to come play and finish out their careers with nothing hanging over their heads. This field, on Rayââ¬â¢s land, would be famous and all the townspeople could come and watch some of the greatest baseball players to ever play the game. An Explication of Beowulfs Monologue About His Past
The main purpose of this anecdote, however, is to describe how and when Beowulf began his career of combat and fame. Within Beowulfââ¬â¢s monologue, the author utilizes alliterations and kenning to help the poem flow and to emphasize the strength and valor of Beowulf as an epic hero. One such example is the kenning used at the beginning of the episode. It reads, ââ¬Å"Beowulf, son of Ecgtheow, spokeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (2425). Instead of the phrasing reading ââ¬Å"Beowulf spoke,â⬠this phrase adds vigor to the beginning. It reinforces the idea that Beowulf is seen as an extremely powerful hero that can take on anything that comes his way as opposed to ââ¬Å"just Beowulf. If ââ¬Å"son of Ecgtheowâ⬠were not used, Beowulf would seem almost boring compared to the magnificent, heroic image that comes to mind when this phrase is employed. Alliteration is also used to allow the poem to flow and also to provide an interesting element to otherwise bland sentences. ââ¬Å"While I was in his ward he treated me no worse as a weanâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ is referring to King Hrethelââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"adoptionâ ⬠of Beowulf after his father died (2432). The repetition of the W sound allows easy movement through the story that Beowulf tells, and it keeps the reader interested in what is being said. Another example of alliteration is the lines 2479-2480: ââ¬Å"My own kith and kin avenged these evil events, as everybody knowsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Without any sound repetition, the reader would become bored with the story, but the author strategically places these examples of alliteration in the epic to provide more exciting details. Along with these rhetorical devices, this passage gives significant details bout Beowulfââ¬â¢s upbringing. The reader learns that Beowulfââ¬â¢s father Ecgtheow dies when Beowulf is only seven years old. King Hrethel takes him in, though, and treats him like one of his own sons. Later, the kingââ¬â¢s oldest son Herebeald is accidentally killed by his younger brother Haethcyn. King Hrethel is so depressed that he lay down and dies from grief. Afterward, there is a battle between the Swedes and the Geats, in which Hrethelââ¬â¢s son Haethcyn, the new king, is killed in battle. Hygelac, the last son of Hrethel and now the new king of the Geats, gave Beowulf treasure and land for fighting alongside them. This battle seems to be one of the first that Beowulf participated in. He says, ââ¬Å"I marched ahead of him [Hygelac], always there at the front of the line; and I shall fight like that for as long as I liveâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (2497-2499). After that first battle, Beowulf launched himself into a life of war and fame, constantly craving the recognition and treasures that came after a successful battle or killing. Beowulfââ¬â¢s monologue about his past allows readers into his mind so that they can understand why he fights the way he does and where he came from in the first place. Without this episode, the poem as a whole would suffer because there would be no back story to explain Beowulfââ¬â¢s desire to defeat monsters and achieve the fame that he thinks he deserves. Perhaps he is making up for the fact that his father died when he was so young: he is trying to live a life that would make his father proud that Beowulf was his son. Telecommuting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Telecommuting - Essay Example There are various benefits that have been attained by firms that have adopted this method as part of their human resources management strategy. While some have had success other firms have experienced a negative effect with their bid to try and adopt telecommuting policies. A recent incidence may have brought the issues that are raised by telecommuting to the fore and this was with the recently appointed chief executive (CEO) of Yahoo banning the telecommuting policy of the company. Discussions have been raised on whether this was a good move or not? What may have called for her action? How does this affect the future productivity of Yahoo as a company? There are a number of advantages that a company may stand to gain from adopting a telecommuting policy. The positives To begin with are the environmental advantages that are to be gained by this policy. The increase in the number of people who are telecommuting means that there are fewer people on the roads driving. This reduces the amount of emissions that are released into the atmosphere and that contribute to green house gases. The other advantage that is provided by telecommuting is that of a social nature and this is as concerns the family unit. Telecommuting is beneficial to parents especially mothers who are accorded the ability to juggle taking care of their young ones while still being able to attend to their office duties. This makes for a stronger family unit and also there is the provision of the needed amount of care given to the children. All this though point to the individual advantage of telecommuting. The idea though is to look at the whole picture from the perspective of the company and how beneficial or otherwise this will be to the company. Though it should be mentioned at the e arliest that there exists different schools of thought on whether telecommuting is beneficial to a company or not but the overall opinion infers to it being more of beneficial. Improving performance Various different studies have been conducted that have looked at the improvements that a firm may get from having a section of its workers telecommuting to work. Some of these studies have found that telecommuting helps boost the performance of the workers and this has been attributed to a number of factors. One of these factors is the amount of time that is saved by workers who do not have to commute to work every day. Each day there is an increasing number of hours that workers spend on the road on their way to and from work. These hours can be better spent working on their various tasks if they telecommute. This savings are also in the fact that a large percentage of the workers are now not forced to endure traffic jams that also consume a lot of the time which limits the workers pro ductivity. If this time is spent doing company related tasks and assignments they can help improve greatly on the output of the company (Johnson, 2001, 169). The other idea is in the fact that those who telecommute to work have been found to have an increased amount of productivity as compared to their colleagues who do not telecommute. One of these studies was done by Staples of which 93% of the surveyed employee agreed to the fact that telecommuting does a good job as far as improving productivity is concerned. This point was supported by over half of the decision makers in the company (Nina, 2013). This has been attributed to there being improved employee morale, lower employee absenteeism and reduced employee stress. All these factors worked to improve the performance o
